rear quarter glass Empty rear quarter glass

Post by Joe73 Sat Aug 05, 2017 10:00 am

Anyone remove and reinstall rear quarter glass? I've done it back in the 80's with good results but there must be some improvements as to how to install. I know its held in with the block and the clips with the screws but what new adhesives are being used? And install procedures? Thanks

Still using Butyl tape...and making sure water does not sit constantly between window and quarter panel...just make sure you use the right size...

Urethan toooooo messy. If your into original Butyl much nicer to work with and provides correct depth of glass for chrome moulding...

I agree. I've done butyl quite a few times on various vehicles. Easy to work with.

How difficult is it to reinstall the quarter windows? Do you put the tape on the window and press onto the body? Is it hard to align the window in the correct spot?

Any links to the correct type of tape to use?

Years ago......As I recall , 3/8 butyl tape will create the "gasket" . Not hard to align as there are "spring " type metal clips with screws that hold the glass against the body.

Awesome, thanks! I took the windows out of my old body without much effort so I figured the ones on my current body should be reinstalled with new gaskets.

My 0.02: have a glass of water handy and dip your fingers in it -- it keeps the butyl from sticking to your fingers.

I found a couple of broken clips that press on the glass. Are these available anywhere? I'm afraid to try and remove any of the clips since they seem like they are easily breakable.

Below is a picture of the clip.

I doubt these are re-proed. And, you're correct in that they are easily broken during removal if not very careful. Remember gathering a set for a guy and it took several donor cars before I could get all of them.

Know anyone with a 3D printer? Looks reproduceable for someone with skills...

I wish there was a business where they would 3D print a part that you brought to them. Probably would not be cost effective for a few clips.

I only replaced the drivers side so I swiped one off the passenger side. I used a forked upholstery clip remover to pop the other clips out without issue.

Passenger side seemed fine and did not leak water so I'm leaving that side alone. I'm hoping my drivers side fix will do okay, it took me a couple of times to install the butyl tape.
