In the pic above you can two spots in my grill that are discolored.  I have no idea what they are from and I am not sure if they will come off.  I plan to wash the car this week and see if it will come off.  If not, I am thinking of painting the grill or at least the areas like the one below.

Kinda strange that just a few places would be discolored.  It's a 1-piece cast grille.  Maybe you can try some solvent on it, of some Mothers metal polish, before you resort to painting it.
   Just some ideas.....

I sandblasted and painted a spare '74 grille for for my car.  I always  preferred the '77 Malibu classic grille, so I painted the entire center semigloss black, and the top and sides aluminum silver.

The color is 1971 (or '72 I can't remember) mulistane blue with 1998 fleet white stripes.  I will mention that if you decide to paint the grille this way make sure the surface is well scuffed, and use a durable paint.  I used duplicolor ceramic engine paint , and chips are minimal.
