I've vin 5d80l4z5oooo3 for '74.
Far as I know the pictured grille is a '74 Sprint SP in either a '76 or '77 Sprint or El Camino.
'74s had that grille with either SP or Sprint emblem.
'75s had GMC embossed as a part of grille casting top front center with ten sections (9 separations,) vertically as you look at the grille. No horizontal bars.
'76 & '77 can't say for sure.

Mine I bought after a superficial resto. in '88 with a Chevelle grille. Daughter crashed that a decade ago. I replaced it with a now sitting in a corner '75 grille.
Bought a '74 "by Chevrolet" Malibu grille on eBay with GMC, 3 separate letters which don't work though they look as above and Sprint emblem for center far left where SP is above. "Made" it fit.

I guess we can do what we wish when in doubt with this old girls. Just so they stay in one piece...

My '74 Malibu as the stock die cast grille which I like, but they tried to save a buck in later years like my '77, Elco with the plastic grille & crappy anodized trim around it. I have an extra '74 grille, but it needs a re-chrome. What does the SP stand for ?? Sprint ?

ok quick ? on the sprint Empty 74 grille

Post by jtenn Thu Feb 21, 2013 8:55 pm

The 74 Chevelle Malibu grille, imo, was beautiful. Very Mercedes but better for the period. It's what caught my eye about this Sprint 25 years ago, all apart in a field in Southern Oregon. After my daughter wrecked mine I looked far and wide for another. Settling on the 75. Not even close.
One I found will be installed soon. Picture to follow. It was re-chromed locally for $450. I think I was screwed on that one.

Sam is that the car your looking at? I like it- good luck!

The "SP" must be a pretty rare bird.

It was re-chromed locally for $450. I think I was screwed on that one. [/quote] I have had nothing but bad luck getting stuff rechromed locally. On my other project I spent $1200.00 getting two bumpers done. Potmetal is a different story, the grille in question is potmetal, I've had misc potmetal pieces rechromed and never gotten satisfactory results ( ie pits, low spots showing through the chrome) and I tried three different chrome shops. It seems nobody spends any time on potmetal to properly repair the surface. ( I would assume places like advanced plating and pauls do but then you have the added expense to ship them) and I am sure pay dearly. Just my 2 cents.
