Adding a tach
I did this years ago on my 74 Monte Carlo, but can't remember how I did it. I want to add an aftermarket tach to my 75 Chevelle. It has HEI ignition, and I don't remember how to attach the wire to the coil for the RPM signal. The instructions are vague, so I would really appreciate any help.

Re: Adding a tach
Hei dist should have a plug slot for the tach plug, s/b next to the other wires that are on there on the part of the cap that sticks out a bit.

Re: Adding a tach
It's the only unused plug in on the cap (next to the bat.) , piece of cake !!!!!!!!!!!!77mali wrote:Hei dist should have a plug slot for the tach plug, s/b next to the other wires that are on there on the part of the cap that sticks out a bit.

Re: Adding a tach
OK, thank you. I'll check it out this weekend and see if I can get it connected. I use a female blade connector to attach to it, correct?

Re: Adding a tach
If I remember correctly the top of of a "stock" cap, where the batt wire connects, actually had the words BATT and TACH stamped on them. That would have been on AC Delco and Blue Streak caps that I've installed.

Re: Adding a tach
Accel also makes a plug for the HEI dizzies with both the batt and tach wires, I picked up one for the peace of mind that it wasn't going to come loose from vibration. It's part # is Accel 170072

Re: Adding a tach
Make sure it didnt come loose off the dizzy, mine used to come loose pretty regularly but now its hooked through the msd box. also make sure its grounded, with the surface clean.

Re: Adding a tach
Hooked up good to the "dizzy" Â ( never heard it called that til recently.), but have no checked the ground.
Someone else advised that I check to make sure the needle was not stuck. Â I have tapped on it and it seems to move freely. Â
Would it still light up if it was not grounded? Â It is lt, just no needle movement.
