This nose on that car? Empty This nose on that car?

Post by BicknellWelding Tue May 29, 2012 11:29 pm

Are there any 73-77 buick, olds, pontiac noses that will swap onto the chevelles and line up. I know some of the olds had body lines at the back of the doors that were different. But looking at the 73 gto posted tonight, got me thinking, if you had the whole front clip plus doors it should be seamless? As it appears they have only one in the front. Basically the doors are the segway between the fender and quarter, I know it will bolt on, but will it "flow"?

I think Limey had a pic of a Cutlass nosed El Camino. It can be done, it just depends on if the body lines extend through the door or not.

I forget details, but it seems as tho I have seen several cases done. The trick is to use the doors that came with the front end. JB

Some of the lines change as the years progress, too. You could put a 77 Cutlass front clip on a Chevelle no problem, I believe, but not a 73 Cutlass since that's got the flare lines on the bottom that wouldn't match up properly. I think it would be cool to see a 76-77 Malibu with the 76-77 442 nose, personally. Or somehow that but with the earlier 442 style rear end.

While what we got was certainly great and brought us all here, I can't help but think some mixing and matching the parts would have yielded better results. For example, the 73 and 74 Cutlass interiors with the rounded vent holes would have been a PERFECT match for the 73 Chevelles and Lagunas. The lines match exactly.

Both those Caminos look like they could've been factory. So its been done. And that dash in the Laguna looks great.

I'll see if I can find those pics.

The GTO is a first gen.

But my point with the Olds above, how far do you want to take it?
He did front clip, doors, four parts of the quarter skin (arch in quarter, lower rocker area, and bumper recession) and Olds 442 rear bumper which really makes it. Even the tailgate had to be modded to work but it looks factory prototype.

It could be done with any of the G3s with the same effect but have never seen one on this level.

Doing just the dog house and doors is a common custom.

I never thought about doing a different G-body dash which is pretty cool.

That cutlass camino is sick. someone that didnt know any better, would just think it was factory. Was the gto camino you refered to flat black with flames?

This was just a question of thought, more than plan. Nice to see people using some imagination. And what were you talking about with the g body dash? In a G3? I never even thought of that, isn't there a substantial width difference? And once again Buick Olds and Pontiac had more interesting dashes in the 80's than chevy.

Some years ago, there were two Elcos around here with Monte Carlo front clips. I didn't care for the looks. The picture above of the red Elco with Olds front clip is really nice.

Somewhere in the country there are GM engineers still kicking themselves for not building some of those. Head Bang

The GSX one was actually built by Buick, and I believe Pontiac made some too. The other makes wanted one, and that is why the GMC Sprint was created, so Buick dealers would have utes to sell. Really the only Chevy makes that catch my attention are El Caminos and Corvettes.

I dig that 442 version especially if it was a full Olds conversion with tailights, Rocket 455, etc.

While I had my 74 Regal I wanted to switch the front clip onto my 76 El Camino, but it would've required changing the quarters to get it to flow right. Does anyone have any Regal or Monte Carlo clips on an El Camino?

Also I'd love to see any custom GTO noses. They're good looking cars, but if someone worked out the front bumper to look more 68-72 it would be awesome.

A brother of a coworker is putting a 77 Monte Carlo ft clip and doors on a 75 elcamino. He says it all fits except the door glass has to be changed to retain the elcamino glass.
