Factory 0-60 & 1/4 miles times
Some interesting stuff I found while bored. Obviously gonna vary depending on options, driver, location, etc. but still neat to see. If anyone else has some proven stock times from magazines, personal experience, or otherwise let me know & it will be added to the list. Maybe we can even start a separate fastest G3 section for modified cars.

Re: Factory 0-60 & 1/4 miles times
i measured my 0-60 acceleration once but it wasnt very acurate, just informal
77 malibu classic 305, edelbrock 450cfm, edelbrock single plane intake, headman headers, dual exhaust... it was around 11sec with 4 people inside.
this was right after i bought the car and the spark plugs were about 100 years old, cables too

Re: Factory 0-60 & 1/4 miles times
I thought my car was wicked fast when I started driving it. Remember, it had 350,000 miles on it when I started, but still had the original drivetrain.
350/350 combo with 3.42 gears. I had 295/50/15 tires on it, but everything else was bone stock. 2 barrel - exhaust manifolds - smog equipment... you name it.
I believe I ran a 17.5 at 88mph and had a blast.
I'll double check the numbers tonight, but I'm 99% sure that was it.

Re: Factory 0-60 & 1/4 miles times
Years ago, I worked for a short time in a machine shop that made carbide tool bits. There was a guy who worked there who had a 60s Furd with a 352 engine. He was always hassling another guy, that had a Buick Century, about drag racing on the road near the shop.
I told the Buick guy to take him on, that the Buick would blow the doors off of that Furd. He did. And it did! At least the Furd guy finally shut the hell up!

My first 74 came to life with a 4bl, but was not that bad with the 2bl. Hate to see what they had for the base 350 that year.

Mini vans today are faster and quicker. I have an old Road test of a 73 similar to mine and they got it to go 14.92.
I think alot of cars the many think were beasts when they were new were really slugs. I bet a new Camaro 6 cylinder could smoke many of them.

Re: Factory 0-60 & 1/4 miles times
The times for passenger cars hasn't changed all that much in 50 years. The '55 Olds 88 was an 8.2 sec 0 to 60 time car, with a 324 cu in engine, and the old 4-speed hydromatic of those days. Of course cars were built for mileage as well as some performance, so rear end ratios varied.

Re: Factory 0-60 & 1/4 miles times
My dad bought a new 55 Oldsmobile Super 88 and he was a racer on and off the strip. It would outrun anything on the road except a 55 Buick Century and he came close to beating him. The only thing was there was not a new Chrysler 300 within 300 miles, so he never tried one of them. He was playing around with a guy in a 56 Furd on I-65 who was determined to catch him and pass him, but dad could run off from him at will. Then he came to a road block and then he found out the other guy was a cop. JB

Re: Factory 0-60 & 1/4 miles times
The Buick Century was a fast car alright. I bought a new Super 88 in '55 when I got out of the military. It was a quick car for it's day, and I pushed it pretty hard. I almost bought a Pontiac instead of the Olds, but it had a small engine. I bought the Olds after a night of celebrating my discharge from the military, and told my mom that I bought a green and white car. Next morning I discovered that it was blue and white! So much for celebrating.

Re: Factory 0-60 & 1/4 miles times
My 77 Malibu Classic sedan 305/350 with a 2.56 rear end and stock-ish 215-70-15 tires. It still has the box stock 305, right down to the 2 barrel carb still bolted to it.
When I first got it, it did 0-60 in 22 seconds. Topped out at 70mph.
Replaced the transmission, tuned it up to stock specs and it would do 0-60 in about 15 seconds.
Tweaked the jetting (I've got a couple 2 jets to swap parts around) and supertuned it, dropped it to 10 seconds.
!/4 mile time I'm guessing will be about 17-18 seconds. It's adequate for a cruiser but I've got plans to wake it up.

Re: Factory 0-60 & 1/4 miles times
Some of the cars from the 50s and 60s had a quite high speed top-end. In those days, we all knew how fast our cars would go Burying the speedo needle was something we did all the time. Hard to do that these days, with all the cops around.

My 76 had the same set up, although my stock gears were 2.73, not 2.56. I could top out at about 80mph, but that's all these turds had. I'd have to agree that the stock 1/4 mile times were close to 20 seconds. The thing would barely even spin a tire even after I played with the timing & done a fresh tune up.

Yeah, I know.
I'd think that 305 could at least get to 100. Huh.

Re: Factory 0-60 & 1/4 miles times
From someone with personal experience in two identical 76 cars, one with a 350 & one with a 305, night & day difference. If Brown Eye would have had a 350, even with a 2bbl, I might have left it alone for a few years.
Also want to point out that I've drove a mid 80's Monte 305 that barely pegged the 85mph speedo & also been in an 83 Z28 with the HO 305 that actually had some guts. What I'm saying is that the LG4 versions sucked no matter what they came in. The L69 is the ONLY carbureted 305 engine that deserves some credit.

Re: Factory 0-60 & 1/4 miles times
The '77 Elco I bought new had a 305 in it. Ya step on the gas, light up a Camel, and wait for something to happen! A 400 small block woke it up though, after a few years with the 305.
Gas mileage went from around 18 to 12 !! My Malibu likes gas even more, about 9 MPG.

Yup, valve float at the top of 2nd gear. It had no 3rd gear nor reverse. It might have gone faster, but was concerned about spinning a factory engine that fast.
Now it tops out the speedo and then some. GPS has clocked it to 115ish depending on the GPS app
My 76 had the 305/350 and a 3.08 rear as well, but I swapped on some late model TPI heads and kept the 2 barrel carb since it had to meet emissions at the time. I think it was running 10 or 11:1 compression with the stock shortblock, even the factory cam was still in it. It'd run like a scalded cat to about 4500 rpm and then fall on its face. Had to retard timing to keep it from pinging, or run premium in it, along with some octane boost and that little 305 would sing its heart out.
0-60 went from 11ish to around 8, It'd top the speedo out pretty well, and bury the needle, not sure how fast it was going.

Re: Factory 0-60 & 1/4 miles times
just got mine up to 120mph the last week. with the play in the steering wheel and a floaty ride, it was quite a scary experience. but i definitely want to do that again!
i think with some carb and timing adjustments i could even squeeze a little more out of it

Re: Factory 0-60 & 1/4 miles times
Now that I've recurved the HEI, and uncorked the exhaust, with a new muffler and no pellet cat, along with tweaking the heck out of the carb and timing. I can now say my 77 is .... less slow. the little 305 does feel more enthusiastic about revving over 3 grand.
0-60 comes up around 10 seconds, and GPS verified top speed of 120. It also knocks down 20mpg. I've still got the two barrel carb. I rebuilt the suspension and put the HD springs in it and it's pretty planted at speed now. I haven't run it through the 1/4 mile, but the sorry axle ratio won't help much out of the hole.

Re: Factory 0-60 & 1/4 miles times
I've never driven my wagon but here's what I could find on it..
Reference vehicle weights are: shipping weight 4306 lbs official base curb weight 4497 lbs .
Performance: top speed (102 mph)
accelerations 0- 60 mph 13.3 s
0- 100 14.2 s
1/4 mile drag time 19.7 s.
Sloooooooow.. I'm hoping to be atleast low 11's when I'm done with the 408.

Re: Factory 0-60 & 1/4 miles times
My 76 Malibu (I am 3rd owner); originally came with a 305 2bbl. TH350, single exhaust, and 2.?? rear gear.
The first owner swapped in a 4bbl carb, intake, headers, single exhaust still. Â I made it duel exhaust and changed the rear gear to 3.73. Â
With 275/60R15 BFG Radial T/A rear tires, I was able to do small strait punch burn outs.
Took the car to Great Lakes Drag Way for high school night and ran a best of 16.46 (forgot the exact mph, but I believe it was around 84-86 mph).
