front passenger frame/body connect Empty front passenger frame/body connect

Post by lars Sun Jul 14, 2019 10:51 am

My battery tray was rotted out by the years of battery acid so I pulled it out and replaced it.

Unfortunately I noticed the section underneath the tray was heavily rotted as well. This is where the frame meets the body on a bushing. Looks like the frame could push through any minute.

This looks almost like it's just a bolt on piece. Anyone know what it is called and how bad it is to replace? Anyone have one for sale?

Thanks a lot,

That would be a core support. I think newmexguy had one listed a while back?

The only other option is to cut out the rot and rebuild the current core support. It may not look factory, but accurate measurements, some scrap iron, and a welder will get it serviceable in short order.

Thank you for the responses guys!

I didn't realize the can of worms. Haha, I guess it comes with the territory.

I had originally only seen this part:
front passenger frame/body connect 65293010

And it looked like it just bolted up to the core support, but it seems both that and the core support are quite rusted.

I agree welding up my current one may be the best option here, the rest of it seems servicable, and I can only imagine shipping on an item that large.

The above loose support is actually 74 Malibu but believe it is essentially identical.  That would be Bus Shipping.  Customer would have to pick up at participating Greyhound station.  Not exactly sure if it will be under a $100, that is a very long distance - roughly 2800 miles.

Very common failure. I replaced the core support in my 76 about 5 years ago. I THINK I did the battery tray too. Inner wheel well only had a small rot spot so it wasn't worth changing.

Yep, mine is shot in the same place, but since I sealed all the seams on the body panels, I can't take it apart to replace it without breaking up all the bodywork.  I even have a spare brace in a box waiting. Rolling Eyes

I've dont that repair on two of our cars over the years. Just need some metal the same gauge as the support and a MIG welder with gas. And I would have hole dimensions and spacing handy as well.

I've also removed rads supports from various cars with only removing the header panel and supporting the fenders. Not ideal but not a big issue if it has to be done. Just time and be careful.

This was how I did mine. Left the fenders in place and pulled the core support out from under them.

Option A is probably the best for me, since the header panel seams were filled too. The biggest trick for me would be finding the time, though.
