Wasn't sure to put this in Interiors or in Electrical?

Regarding the clocks we have in these '73 thru '77's, round ones for the gauge package, looked around and not able to find anyone who retrofits a quartz replacement for these?

I have a nice quartz replacement in my '72 that works great. We could send these clocks out to have them worked by some specialists but they will end up failing in the future so the quartz replacement seems to be the real answer here.

Two questions?


  1. Has anyone found any quartz replacements for these clocks? I have looked around and found NONE!
  2. If there was a quartz replacement, would you spend ~$150 for one? How many of you are out there that would spend that much for a GOOD QUARTZ replacement? 


I might have a supplier that makes them for other applications and would make them up for this application, just trying to see if it is feasible and what the market might be?

None of the gauge and clock repair shops have a quartz conversion kit? Seems many, many years ago (before I started scavenging working clocks at the JY's) when I sent the one from my Monte out for repair, I had the option of a quartz conversion. Can't even remember where it was I sent it, though. As for spending $150 for a conversion...not worth the money to me.

I remember reading somewhere on another GM forum that they were using a corvette quartz clock and retrofitting it to their gm. Might want to google "corvette quartz clock retrofit".

In the shop manual it actually say you are supposed to lube them. I squirted some wd 40 in mine last summer and it seemed to work.

I tried finding where I read it, but I swear that someone had repaired a clock himself by opening it up and fixing some soldered connections.

I found this place, ISI, that has some quartz movements that are close, but not an exact replacement, probably might be able to make one of their models work, but would like to see if someone out there has an exact replacement:

Working them is one thing, but when parts such as the coils go bad, you need either new parts or a new clock. I have 3 of these clocks that are beyond repair as I have tried working on them and found them to beyond fixing.

Hey Guys- I know of a super nice guy who does restoration work on the GM clocks and restores the AM FM 8 Track Delco units also. His name is Joe Sciarrino at 225 Granada Parkway, Lindenhurst New York, 11757. His email is curlyfries3446@hotmail.com he has done 3 AM/FM 8Track units and they look NOS and work as they should. I have 3 stock clocks and have taken them apart and repaired them my self. Don't just spray lube in there though. The mechanism uses a real short winding cycle. As, the clock operates the spring slowly unwinds moving two "points" together. They make contact 12v is sent to a repla inside and it starts the whole process over again. These points get dirty or burned just like standard points in a distributor do. If you are real careful you can use a jewelers file and flatten and clean up the contacts. takes pictures as you disassemble as there is a spring that can be lost when you take the cover off. Lift it off slowly. Spray all down w/lighter fluid or contact cleaner. Use a pin or tooth pic to oil the ends of each pinion shaft you see. Put it back and test. If it is ok you'll see or hear the contacts and the snap back they make. Mine is running fine for the 8 months no problems. If it's already broke you can't hurt it and you might just fix it. They are crazy to buy working. $100 plus...
