Any time you can raise the air cleaner lid off the top of the carb will make more power. The drop base is the standard because most stock hoods can't fit much more with a taller intake. But if you can fit it, a flat base an tall filter is best. I had a 69 z/28 scoop on my nova and used a 4" element.

Always used the Open air 3.5" finally sold it wen I got John Murtaughs set up aka Dynchel better known as my central vac unit LMAO

Currently I have a k&n (3" tall). A flat base a domed lid & a k& n stub stack.
