I've got 1973 el Camino and came across 68 cutlass 442 rear end 12 bolt posi with SF code.
Will it fit 73 el Camino?

If I remember correctly, when GM went from an 8.2" ring gear to an 8.5" ring gear in 1970 1/2 the 12 bolt was being phased out. Hence '72 being the last year of the 12 bolt. I believe I read a comparison some time ago that the 8.5" rears used a bigger pinion bearing than the 12 bolts. This bigger bearing allowed for more load (punishment).
I think the 8.5 rear is a good rear and has held up to some good power over the years. My buddies grand national ran in the 10s with his 8.5" rear.
As with anything, everything has its limitations.
For me, if I were producing massive REAR wheel horsepower and needed an upgrade, I'd put in the ready made Ford 9" for our cars.

It sounds to me like his rear end is stock & he was hoping for a bolt in upgrade.

@ Joe X2.

I think Bill (pila) has a Ford 9 in his Elco build (the one w/ the 500+ cube Caddy motor).
