Rear Bumper fillers OPGI Empty Rear Bumper fillers OPGI

Post by oldstofty Thu Dec 12, 2013 8:54 am

I am looking for replacement Bumper fillers for my 77 Cutlass. OPGI has them but their description reads:
"These premium-quality, injection-molded rubber or plastic bumper fillers fit between the body and the front or rear bumper. Sold in a pair."

My first question is are they rubber or plastic is says both and my second question is are these only for the rear? they say both but i thought the front was different.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the link: http://www.opgi.com/cutlass/1977/bumpers-hardware/bumper-inserts/C240928/

also parts place list them in ABS plastic for half the cost OPGI...

The best thing to do is call them. I have called a couple of times and got good answers to my questions but If the person you talk to doesn't know ask for somebody that does.

OMG. BP1341V (1974 - 1975 Chevelle) REAR BUMPER FILLERS 2 DOOR (2 PIECES) FIBERGLASS $239.00

Didn't know anyone had this! A little pricey!

I need someone to teach me how to make molds for part in fiberglass so I can charge an arm and a leg for stuff.

I really want to learn to do this and make a bunch of hard to find parts for cheap for my G3 buddies.

You will require a good original of the part you are trying to duplicate -- then you make a fiberglass mold of it so it's a 'negative' of sorts. Then you can produce the part itself from the mold. The better your original, the better your reproduction.

You are correct in that the originals were rubber.. The glass parts are durable, but not flexible.....
I tried to refurbish the originals, but they are just too old & crack easily...

You got lucky.  I bought fiberglass reproduction years ago and the were (are Mad ) complete  Turd .The only reason the look even a little ok is because i have the bumpers tucked tightly against the body.

That's because the originals were made of urethane, which becomes brittle with too much UV exposure.

I have fiberglass ones on my front and they worked out just fine. Biggest issue was that they came oversized and had to be trimmed down, and a couple bolt holes didn't line up. What kind of problems did you experience?

Mine were oversized also.  They were also warped and had no mounting tabs.  I guess they figured you were on your own to figure out how to mount them.  I think i bought them from Modern Chevrolet (?) its been many years, i don't remember 100%.

I read somewhere (maybe here?) that certain plants produced better quality urethane than others. I know my Baltimore built car's rear filler was in sad shape. I got a replacement from Mcarlo77 a good while back & it seems to still be very flexible compared to the original one. If it were me I'd stay away from anything "plastic" for that application.

My '74 was built in Canada.  The urethane was still flexible and intact.  The problem with mine it was warped real bad (the RR being the worse side by a large margin). On the front the right front was a little wavy and the left front was a nos piece installed before i got the car, so it was perfect.

My friend has a lot of Cadillacs,he usually has to replace them when he buys one and he says some models just fit and work better than others, depends on the shape.

I bought a front 3 piece set for my 73 from Replica-plastics they were all fiberglass. The 2 outside corner pieces were unusable because were to ridgid to flex around the fenders like the oem ones do. The center piece was missing all the rear mounting tabs. JUNK! I ended up buying NOS from a guy on this forum and got the corner pieces from a yard in Utah. I found them on www.car-part.com. Suprisingly I found a nice front bumper near me by using that site for $100.

The center piece on a '73 was urethane? On my '74 it is steel.

Front center on mine is steel as well, but have no idea of the rear. Never had one since I've owned the car.

The rears (OE) were two pieces and urethane.

The 73 had a urethane center piece that screwed in several pieces in the front and tabs folded over back and screw into the rear of the bumper support
holding it securly in place, they were a 73 only deal.
Replica plastics center  just lays on top and overlays the corner pieces under the head lights, they omitted the rear tabs so it can flop up and down
and rub the paint off the mating corner pieces. They might be just fine for the back
but on the 73  front set up I wouldn't waist my time/money.
