rebuilding door hinges Empty rebuilding door hinges

Post by pila Wed Apr 24, 2013 10:38 pm

I rebuilt the door hinges for my El Camino project. The usual pin & bushings of course, but I needed to do the roller that engages the spring-loaded detent to hold the door open.
With the spring removed, I discovered that the shaft that the roller runs on, is pressed in place, and it has splines on it. Clamping the shaft in the vice, I tapped the hinge to remove the splined shaft.
Then I found that the hole the shaft was pressed into, was the right size for a 5/16-24 tap, so I tapped the hole, and used a bolt with an un-threaded shank that was the correct amount for a bushing, which the roller will run on. I used an aircraft bolt, since I have those in stock.
Anyway, just a bit of info for anyone who may want to re-do door hinges.....

Thanks. My bushings are in decent shape, but my passenger door is actually missing the detent pin altogether, so this info will come in handy when I eventually get to that point.
