I wanted to add a l88 scoop (to my steel hood) but i have seen to many crack at the mating line. Even if you Google "bonding fiberglass to steel" appx 95% of comments say not to do it. Quote: its not a matter of if it will crack but when.......

I bonded one on my original hood before I got the glass hood. I had it for a little over 2 years without cracking. I ground the paint off the hood, laid down a thin layer of "gorilla hair" (long fibered fiberglass) then riveted the scoop on and blended it on with fiberglass. Came out nice until I bent the hood.

Nowadays they have urethane adhesive to put body panels on. I think I would glue it down with urethane and then mold it in.

The pic of the one that's off the car looks like there is a small crack on it.

There are also epoxies avail for structural bonding. If I were to buy one I think I'd give it a coat of epoxy over some carbon fiber mat before the install.

I'd bolt it on with a neoprene gasket of some kind underneath the scoop too but that's just me.

I dont think I'd go neoprene gasket and the epoxy would probably dry too hard and stiff. The urethane would remain flexible to allow for the differences in expansion and contraction of fiberglass to metal.

Best stuff I've ever used is 3M 5200 urethane adhesive/sealant. They use it to bond boat decks to hulls. 48 hours to tack and 7 days to cure. It remains flexible forever and you cant get it off. I use it when I put thru hull fittings in boats. Never leaks. They also make a 4200 that dries a little quicker. Home depot usually carries it.

The epoxy coating is thin, like fiberglass resin & a 1:1 ratio parts A+B. There are different durometers of neoprene avail. You can use a softer grade with about 1/4 the hardness of say a body bushing. I can get it in rolls 3/8 or 1/4" thick x 50'. My thought was to give it more compression in the bolt area between the metal and the scoop as the two surfaces have different expansion characteristics. Of course using a glass hood would be easier, lighter & a lot less work.

I'll take a peek @ that 5200 sounds like something I could def use in places of the gasket. How thick a bead did U use?

I didnt use 5200 on a glass hood but I've used it for loads of other stuff. You can make it as thick as you like, just a long dry time. I even used it on a cracked humidifier in the house and a 250 gallon water container that cracked. Just scuffed the area and put some 5200 on with a paint mixing stick to spread it out. Left it about 1/8- 3/16" thick and let it harden.

Yeah, this isn't a rare item. Every fiberglass guy makes them, and some are different sizes.
