Post by malibob73 Mon Jul 30, 2012 5:50 pm

Hi again.

I have a diff. that i bought with my chevelle, (bought it from the guy who sold me the car) it's a limited slip, 2:56 gear ratio, that i know... and the letters ''X and K'' stamped on the tube ???

I've searched for ID for this diff but i can't seem to find from what vehicle it came from??

It's about 1/2'' wider than my original one, so it should fit.

Can someone help me out with this?

Here's a few pic's.

Thanks! Bob.

If your measuring backing plate to backing plate a monte rear is slightly wider but I dont remember by exactly how much.

Why would a Monte rear axle be wider?

Dont know why its wider. I have my original 3.42 posi rear "resting" in my garage since a buddy racked up his monte with a 4.10 rear. So I picked up the rear since is was newly rebuilt. When I bolted her in it seemed a little different so I measured. It was a little wider.

post a pic of the end of the tube where the backing plate attaches. They did run BOP rear ends in the chevelles. The BOP rears have bolt on axles instead of c-clips.

How to tell is if the tube necks down right before the flange for the backing plate then its a c-clip rear, if its a straight tube and does not loose OD before the flange then its a bolt in axle.

here's a few pic's of my diff's
-the one with limited slip is the worst looking one ( the one i want to use), and the black one is from the 73 chevelle parts car, so same as the one on my car.

maybe by seeing the pic's someone will know where it is from??
The housing is a bit different, the mounting brackets for the coils too.
and the L/slip one is 1/4'' wider than the original.( this won't make a difference).

I don't know diffs real well other than the GM 8.5, but the other one you have looks very simular to one I removed from a 69 Impala wagon. Older motorhead (mentor) called it an "11-bolt". Said they're like a 12-bolt in that they have a 8.75 or 8.875 carrier - depending on which GM brand, but have a 10-bolt cover. Can't really tell from comparing the pics to an old memory. If that is one of those, it may be difficult to find parts. Early drag racers pretty used them all up.

Thanks Bill for your reply,

I don't know if it is in good condition but if the gears and the locking mechanism are ok, all i would do is to change the seals and bearing, and clean it of course.
I am not verry famyliar with what goes on in that box.

I cant remember if the 69 Impala had the spring perches on the axle housings or on the lower arms. I'm sure someone here knows for sure. But that sure looks like I remember.
You may be better off getting a whole carrier for the 8.5. Generally the mid-80s trucks have limited slip and bolt right in. You can usually find an array of ratios from 3:23 thru 4:11 in these as well. Just a suggestion.

That certainly looks like the correct gasket. Site doesn't really detail what the differences are. Let me know as you find out more.

Every 8.5 I've been inside which would be 72 and newer all used the gasket on the left that says GM 8.5.

Same here. The other just says 10-bolt even though the whole page seems dedicated to 8.5s. I still believe the other is the 10-bolt with the larger carrier. If it is, it will make him a nice set.
