I have a '74 Malibu also, and the brakes were good when I bought it in 1990. But when I did the front end and steering rebuild, I replaced all the brake parts, so I wouldn't have to go back into it.
It always stopped very good over the years..even from 100 MPH !
Doing the mod to 11 inch drums on the rear requires going to 15 inch wheels by the way.....14s wont fit over the bigger drums.

Mine are 15s, but plan on going with 17s or 18s asap.
