Re: toasted tranny
Haha, oh man. When I bought my 77 it originally had a 350 in it. The owner dumped in an old racing motor he had laying around from super stock series and sold it as-is. That poor tranny barely made it a month before losing all forward gears.
It's technically a weaker transmission in stock form, but I swapped in a built up 700r4 and haven't had a single regret. Better low and high end but the price of entry is higher than the stronger 200, especially if you want everything made for each other since you'll want just the right rear gears to take advantage of the tranny gearing and may need bigger tires in the back to handle that 3.06 first gear if you're running 3.73s or up. And forget a good launch if you have an open differential back there. It all add$ up.
Of course, if you don't mind breaking traction all the time...
