I add a quart or Rislone ZDDP additive to the Monte when I change the oil in it.

So if I use Rotella T do I still need the additive?

That's hard to say, since if the engine has some on it, the cam & lifters are likely well mated at this point. It's likely about the same cost for the additive at oil change, as it is to use "off-road" or racing oil. I'm currently using Valvoline VR-1 in flat tappet engines, but there are other brands of course.

Old flat tappet cams work harden after a while, and become more resistant to wear. This may explain why you can use regular oil in your original engine, but a rebuild without the additive will flatten the lobes.

Comp does a nitrating process on their cams that mimics this work hardening to a certain degree. Other mfrs may do it also, but Comp is the only one I've read about. I would still use the additive with a nitrated cam, however.
