Transmission issues on a 1976 chevorlet el Camino

So I bought a 1976 chevorlet el Camino non running got it running the first day guy said yeah if you can get it running it will drive so i did it's the th350 trans and went and put it in drive nothing just reved up put it in reverse same thing went under the car it was clicking into gear and everything dropped the pan didn't smell burnt of have any discoloration changed the filter and filled it back up nothing any pointers

Before doing other things, unhook the linkage on the shifter, at the arm on the trans. Put it in park manually with that arm. The go up & put the shift lever in the park position. Under the car, see if the linkage stub will slide into the trans arm freely, or if it's misaligned. If it's way off, adjust the linkage to let it go in the trans arm easily. Then try to get it to work again....If it doesn't, it may have more serious problems...

If you didn't find a crap ton of metal shavings inside the pan when you dropped it then it's probably something more basic like the "S" hook on the shift linkage inside the transmission. It may have come undone. It's directly inside where the shift shafts goes through the case. Here is a pic.
