Re: 73 camper special 454
Transplant the 454 into the 73 grand am?
Just leave it unmolested and drive it?
Cost me $2500 shipped.

Re: 73 camper special 454
Your looking at the worst part of the truck.
The under carriage is beautiful.
81,000 miles..lots of original parts...unmolested.
Truck was well cared for.
All fluids were clean..
Missing valve cover breather resulted in oil covered engine compartment..easy fix.
Notice the ignition box on firewall?
Runs good for point type system..but HEI should wake it up some.
I'm pretty happy with my $2500 cost including shipping from the West coast.

Thats actually a battery isolater. Used to charge the truck and camper batteries both when running. When you shut the motor off and camp, It will only draw from the camper battery and not the truck. This way the truck battery won't be low when you start it. I replaced one a few years ago on my dad's RV.
Beware HEI's have lots of mechanical and vacuum advance. If you want to keep the old school stock look, get a pertronix for the original dist. I put one in my vette 20 yrs ago and still going strong. Point dist is more tuner friendly in my opinion.
Truck is a nice find. Lots of aftermarket sheet metal and support for the square bodies. Good luck!!!
Are those split rims? Yikes!!

Re: 73 camper special 454
I noticed the gap on the rim.
Dont think they are split rims..but not 100% Shure.
Point type ignitions are susceptible to moisture problems.
Love HEI.

Re: 73 camper special 454
Drive it around some before you start pouring money into it.
I had a similar big block truck with similar rust but was 3/4 ton. It was one rough rider and the bodywork would have cost a small fortune. I yanked the motor/trans and sent the rest down the craigslist road.
One thing I found on the '73s, the firewall is scary close for an HEI and rubber motor mounts. FYI.
It's cool color and big block...
Thanks -
