73-77 Front and rear wheel stud knurl sizes
I'm interested in correct info about 74 el camino front and rear wheel stud knurl sizes and any opportiunity to go metric (12x1.5 or others).
I know they are 7/16-20 but there are 2 different knurl sizes that were availiable as I understand - 0.564 and 0.472 (and second are 5mm longer).
Dorman website gives 2 knurl sizes, Rockauto gives 3 sizes
I would like to know somehow the right size without taking studs out to order metric replacement kit if it exists with such knurl size.
Thank you

Re: 73-77 Front and rear wheel stud knurl sizes
I just measured some stock studs I have from my original axles. They measure .465 on the outside edges of the knurl
My aftermarket studs that came with my new "Ten Factory" also measure .465 on the outside of the knurl.
My Moroso "long" wheel studs that I will be using in my car measure .480 on the outside of the knurl. And the packaging also states .480 knurl.
So if I were looking to replace my stock studs I'd be going with the .472 knurl you listed. You can always drill your axles a bit to make a larger size fit.

Re: 73-77 Front and rear wheel stud knurl sizes
Thank you for measurments!
Descriptions of items are full of Late GM rotors/Early Drums, Late Drums, etc words but I don't know clearly where Early ends and Late begins.
But what about front rotors studs? I think knurl must be the same as rears, musn't it?
Read that people change studs on rear end without taking axle out as there is enough space for stud to come out. I wonder if this operation can be made on front rotors without taking them off?
And if taking number 0.472 as truth it becomes impossible to go M12x1.5 studs without drilling larger holes, that's sad.
Thank you

Rears can definitely be changed by simply removing the brake drum. But the fronts, you will have to remove the rotor which would include the wheel bearings.
I'm not up on converting wheel studs but this might help you. http://www.elcaminocentral.com/archive/index.php/t-22657.html
