Electric fuel pump mounting Empty Electric fuel pump mounting

Post by WyldeBill66 Sun Jun 08, 2014 3:02 am

I am going to be mounting a new Holley electric fuel pump on my 75 Chevelle. On there right now is an Autozone small one that I suspect has been the root of all my troubles. My question is, any of you who mounted a pump like this, where did you mount it? The old pump was mounted above the rear end in front of the fuel tank. Everything I've read said it should be below the level of the fuel tank, not above it. I'd appreciate any tips or better yet, pictures.

Thank you all in advance.

Bill

I've run a few electric pumps, but always an inline type, along with the engine driven pump. My current El Camino project has the pump under the cover in the front of the bed. If you are using just the electric pump, having it below the fuel level may be important, to keep it primed.

Standard vane type electric pumps are not good at creating a suction so they sometimes can starve due to the siphon effect being enough. Gerotor type fuel pumps are much better at pulling and maintaining a vacuum for the pump. Though they do generally cost more money.

Best location is in the tank. No worries about lack of fuel, and it runs cooler and quieter. The downsides are that it's more work to install/replace, in-tank units can be more expensive, and you may have to modify the trunk floor depending on the unit.

You could always run a caprice tank with a replacement (in tank) pump.

I already have the pump, so I just want to know if anyone has mounted one and where they did. I want to quit fighting with the fuel issue. I don't think on the frame would be a good place, as if I throw something up with the back tire, it would be in harms way. Any ideas out there?

I mounted mine on the back side of the upper control arm mounts on the frame. It's a pretty natural route for the fuel line.

Someone suggested that. I'll have to jack up the car and take a look under there and see how it looks. Thank you.

Here is a picture of the general area, there would be plenty of room w/o the global west support bars.

I tried to look up in there the other day, but I need to jack up the back of the car to see it really good. Car too low to slide under there well enough until I do. I will check it out this weekend and see what it looks like. Thanks for the tips everyone. I'll let you know how it goes.
