Never had engine with aluminum heads. I put rubber ribbed valve cover gaskets on and they leak like a siv. What do you all use? It looks like it's coming right through the bolt holes.

I wish I could offer advise, but I have iron heads.  I've never heard of this problem, do you have spreader bars?  That stopped my old chrome covers from leaking.

What type valve covers ? The cast aluminum type usually solve the leak problems that the stamped steel type sometimes have.
You might be able to slip O rings on/under the heads of the bolts (?)

I do have chrome valve covers with the spreader bars. Only put permatex on top side of gasket to hold. Should I do both?

Ive had better luck using studs rather than bolts to hold the valve covers down. Try using cork gasket too. They seem to seal better. They make thick ones,I think Fel Pro makes them. Might even have them over the counter and Auto Zone or Advanced.

I am using summit steel frame reusable rubber gaskets on mine with wing nuts and studs instead of bolts.  Don't glue them to anything. I have airflow research aluminum heads on mine.

I've always used studs with wing nuts & spreader bars and never had problem.  Currently I have thick flange m/t covers that won't accept the spreaders but no leak issues.  Make sure the bolts have never been over tightened and the flange is straight (I've seen plenty where the cover is peened around the bolts, this will leak every time)

Cork is your friend, with spreader bars.

Ribbed ? Got a picture?

But take the covers off and look at the holes for peening as Dynchel said, and also make sure the gasket didn't slip off.  I had that happen once, there was just enough for it to seal at the start but finally worked it's way out from between the head and the valve cover.

Ok put in Edlebrock gaskets. They held for the 20 minute burn in at 2000 rpm. Took it for a short ride. My foot accidentally slipped to the floor(LOL) it started smoking again. Got back to the garage and they were leaking again. Looks like I'll be taking them off one more time.

Center bolt or perimeter type covers? It's leaking around the bolts? I thought center bolt had a o-ring on each bolt?

I've reused the same cork valve cover gaskets for the past 17 years, even reused them multiple times when Swapping to different valve cover styles. No leaks, no problems.

Not sure about your covers, but may folks have leak problems with chromed covers for some reason.
I have a pair, that came on my '74 Malibu when I bought it in 1990. I can't seem to give them away. Different engine since then...

I assume this engine has a PCV valve and a breather on opposite valve covers?
