Possibly needing front speakers.
I got those rear speaker boxes hoping that installing those would help with giving me more sound out of my radio. It didn't help a whole lot. So, I am thinking of maybe doing some front speakers in the kick panels. I have a spare set of kick panels I can use to cut up, so I do not have to cut my orginals up. Does anyone here have expierence doing front kick panel speakers in their car? There isn't much under the dash(since it being a non air car) so it would be difficult to mount them under the dash. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Re: Possibly needing front speakers.
I'm thinking more leaving it, than doing anything. I was going to do it before, when I put in the new radio and speakers, but decided to leave it until later. Mainly because I couldn't find any speakers with a plain, mesh grille. All I found was a bunch of fancy crap. I'm not looking to have a huge "system", just something to sound halfway decent. If I do ever decide to do it down the road, I at least want an idea of what to do.

kyle a suggestion since you are not driving it in the winter to conceal any mods that you do is remove the two side air duct's for your heat (you dont drive in winter anyway) real small ones like 2" will give you enough sound that you want since your system isnt really loud anyways you wont damage the small one's just a thought and no one will know any different unless you tell them

It's a non air car, so there are no heat ducts. It comes only out the floor.

Re: Possibly needing front speakers.
well it would be easier to find side pillar panels i think than kick panel's unless you already have them. just a thought for mounting the real small pod speakers, they do give really good sound kyle for what you need the lil small ones would work great

Re: Possibly needing front speakers.
Hard to explain but you could make brackets to hold speakers to bolt under dash not seen ...sorta pointing at feet but out of the way....

Re: Possibly needing front speakers.
My dad's Chevelle has them mounted under the dash, so I know what you're trying to say.

Re: Possibly needing front speakers.
mount some 4X6 speakers in the bottom of the doors where it's carpeted- you can get some grilles from Radio Shack that look like oem when you paint them to match the door panel.

Re: Possibly needing front speakers.
I didn't want to cut holes in any of my interior panels, and only wanted some decent sound. I modified the original front dash speaker mount to hold 2 4" Alpine speakers. They sound great and can easily be run off an amp if you wanted to. Here is a photo of it before I painted the wood I used to mount the speakers.

get some tweeters. they're small and easily concealable yet make a huge difference in sound and quality

Re: Possibly needing front speakers.
I tried to leave in my factory speaker
than I tried 2- 4x6's with a factory bracket
but I liked the sound of the alpine 5x8 better.so I had to rig it.

Re: Possibly needing front speakers.
Awhile back In my '76 I had a pair of 3 or 4" JCPenny (made by Sparkomatic) enclosures that screwed to the firewall, provided lots of highs and did ok with the rear 6x9s with an '80s GM shaft radio.
Now the '77 has 4x6s up front on a factory bracket and 6x9s in the rear with again an '80s GM AM/FM/Cassette, Sounds ok considering the radio is marginal (got a bad solder joint somewhere)
I went with the factory look, and don't have any need for window-rattling sound

Re: Possibly needing front speakers.
I'm wanting to do the same thing....how much of the dashboard needs to be removed to access the speaker bracket?

Re: Possibly needing front speakers.
The way I've pulled them out is to remove the lower horizontal duct vent (a/c equipped cars), the ashtray A$$'y and the middle dash vent housing (this requires standing on your head while feeling around for the four mtg bolts). Once that's removed, you should have clearance to get your hand up there and get at the two speaker mtg bracket bolts out.

Re: Possibly needing front speakers.
Great! Thanks for the tips. Middle dash vent housing...I'm assuming that's the two vents just to the right of the instrument panel? I've never had that out before...got any more tips on removing that?

Re: Possibly needing front speakers
Yep...that is correct. There are four hex head screws that hold it in place. The one shown here has one mtg ear broken off (pointing to it with a pen). I can usually get a short extension with a 1/4" socket and reach up there and loosen them by hand. If you look closely, you'll also see four other hex head screws w/flat blade screwdriver slots that hold the front of the vent to the housing. You don't need to remove those. Once this is pulled back and lowered down from behind the dash, the speaker is in full view. I may have one of those dual speaker brackets complete with a pair of speakers if interested in upgrading from a single speaker.

Re: Possibly needing front speakers.
Great! Just what I needed to know...that's really helpful. I've found a 6x9 dual voice coil speaker on-line that I think I'm going to order. Looks like that will be the easiest install and it's only about 50 bucks.

Re: Possibly needing front speakers.
After all of these years...I'm close to having front speakers in my Monte. I have some spare kick panels, so I don't have to cut the originals. I have had them since about 2007 LOL. My dad just put brand new ARC Audio front speakers in his Chevelle, and gave me the old Pioneer 4" rounds. I also have two Pioneer 6x9 3-ways in the back window (concealed under the stock window tray, and stock speaker boxes in the trunk). All I have to find is some plain black mesh grilles for the front ones. Going to head up to the place my dad got his speakers. They were able to find some for his set. Guy he talked to said they rarely even use the grilles, but they always keep them. I'm sure they can find me something.

Re: Possibly needing front speakers.
These Chevelles & Monte's should have been built with 2 smaller speakers in either the kick panels or some other place near them. Would have saved a great many dash pads. The center speaker on the pad is a real weak point and not very appealing. Maybe they should have borrowed from the Cutlass design.

Re: Possibly needing front speakers.
Agreed! Always seemed kind of cheap on Chevy's part to have a single speaker in the middle of the dash instead of two speakers spaced apart on either side. Yes, I know they optioned a dual speaker...but, they were still mounted in the center of the dash any added effect of two speakers side by side is questionable.
