ive been thinking about gettiing a gilmer belt drive and tossing the power steering. more power plus i get stronger its a win win situation. Very Happy i never though much about it before so whats they typical change in power like 20hp right? how bout torque and gains? is milage effected? what do you guys think looks best at a show?

now thats a nice kit for the price..come with new chrome water pump and the gilmer kit. that would look badass on my motor.

Corey I just sold mine after a 2 month advertisement ............anyways you don't lose the power steering with the Gilmer belt drive you gain about 15% horsepower and the power steering V-groove is one the back of the crank pulley

so that little groove is for it and it wont have problems at high rpm with breaking or slips?

dont do manual steering unless all you plan on doing is going to the strip. Believe me Ive tried it. It sucks.

Manual steering in one of these cars? Shoot, I manhandled a 75 Caprice with manual steering back when I was learning to drive. I think my pythons grew a couple of inches in diameter that summer, lol.

So please explain how these belt drives free up power. It looks to me that they would rob power from the wide belt adding drag? How does it fare to a serpentine set-up?

the best belt setup is the factory setup- the serp setup being the best of the bunch for function and the basic v belt setup using the least power. changing pulley ratios will free up a little power, but in the real world it's best to err on the side of caution and keep the stock pulley ratios so the alternator can keep up and the water pump can flow enough water to keep things nice and cool.
as for how much power you will free up by getting rid of the PS pump- not enough to notice. the pump is in bypass mode and eating up very little HP until you turn the wheel, and even then it only uses a few hp until you get to full lock and the pump starts making noise. the biggest gain from getting rid of the PS system is the weight loss (20 pounds or so off a 4000 pound car) and uncluttering the engine compartment and allow easier access to fix stuff.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts Derrik. To me these just look like show pieces. Definitely not really the type of set up I'd use for a street/strip car for that price. JMHO It's like having the supercharger without the advantage of supercharging anything.
